 Dr. Sidney Cohen is currently Professor of Medicine the Director of Research Programs and Operations in the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia. Prior to joining Thomas Jefferson University, Dr. Cohen served as Richard Laylord Evans Professor of Medicine at Temple University and also Distinguished Temple University Professor.
Dr. Cohen’s many clinical interests within the field of gastroenterology include gastrointestinal motility disorders, diseases of the esophagus, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and esophageal cancer. Dr. Cohen is editor and contributor to several major professional texts and journals in the field of gastroenterology, including The New England Journal of Medicine, Digestive Health and Nutrition, Gastroenterology, Sleisenger, Fordtran's Gastrointestinal and Liver Disease, among many others.
Dr. Cohen is the former President of the Association of Professors of Medicine and was awarded The Julius Friedenwald Medal by the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), in 2002. The award is the AGA’s most prestigious, and honors lifelong contributions to the field of gastroenterology. Dr. Cohen was also president of the AGA, the largest gastroenterological society in the United States.
He is also affiliated with the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American College of Physicians, in addition to active involvement with the AGA in a number of capacities, including Vice President, President-Elect and President, and currently serves as Vice Chair of Individual and Physician Gifts for the Foundation for Digestive Health and Nutrition, the research and education Foundation of the AGA.
Dr. Cohen completed a fellowship in Gastroenterology at the New England Medical Center and an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Boston City Hospital, both in Massachusetts. He received his bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University in New Jersey and his doctorate degree at the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center, where he graduated magna cum laude.
