Diagnosis
IBS Questions
There is no diagnostic test, such as a blood or a stool test, or an x-ray or ultrasound that can provide a definite diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome. Your doctor will make a diagnosis of IBS based on symptoms that characterize the disorder (abdominal discomfort or pain, bloating, constipation or other altered bowel symptoms) and eliminate certain markers to rule out other conditions.

When you visit your doctor, he or she will take a medical history. This means that he or she will ask several questions about your symptoms in order to make an accurate diagnosis. This is why it is so important to talk openly and honestly about your symptoms to your doctor.

To make a diagnosis, your doctor may also conduct a general physical examination.
